Because in the school of the Spirit man learns wisdom through humility, knowledge by forgetting, how to speak by silence, how to live by dying. – Johannes Tauler
“Good morning.” he whispered softly to the early risers…time to rub the sleep out of our eyes and greet the day with heart and soul. Today, and every day should begin…from the inside out. How is my heart today? How is my soul today?
Do you remember the old TV commercial from the seventies (I’ve lost half of you!), where the old Indian looks out on the American countryside strewn with litter…as the camera zooms in on him to capture the powerful emotion of a single tear falling down his cheek?
How about today? How could any of our elders who have come from the time and place where we lived value-centric lives and adhered to a long-forgotten practice known as the Golden Rule look out on this and be anything but devastatingly heartbroken? The single tear has become a river to anyone with a heart and a soul…and open mind!
How black must the heart and soul of the looting flash mob be? How black must the heart and soul of Black Friday-Shoppers punching, kicking and…pepper spraying their way to bargains be? And all of this, as the Statist scrambles to remove the Cross from our view…while the American President issues a Godless Thanksgiving Address! But the most terrifying aspect of this horror is that it is perceived as “normal” by our 14 and 15-year-old children! What nightmare am I living in? How does an American President deliver a Thanksgiving Day message to the Nation…without mentioning GOD? And more importantly, who have WE become to tolerate such a man? How is your heart today? How is your soul today? Perhaps, on some level as the Tauler quote suggests, we do need to die to learn how to live again…
Humility is the quality I miss most in us. It is the most unassuming, softest, quietest, and effective SHOUT of all. Yet it is lost on generations who have grown up worshipping their heroes who have mastered spiking the ball in the ego-feeding end zone frenzy…while Denver’s Tim Tebow is relentlessly ridiculed for quietly acknowledging the grace of God for his glory! Need one look any further to assess the break?
If honor is the gift a man gives himself, then Humility is the wrapping paper and the ribbon we tie it with…never for show, always for know. And the knowing where it matters most! Better for the rest of the world to wallow in complete ignorance of you than to be falsely enlightened by the man made from the outside in! How many millions upon millions have suffered the charismatic smile covering the black and empty heart?
Who will lead us from this place? I truly wish I could say. This much I know…He must know Humility, or we must forget him! It is a matter of Heart and Soul!
Do you wish to be great? Then begin by being. Do you desire to construct a vast and lofty fabric? Think first about the foundations of humility. The higher your structure is to be, the deeper must be its foundation. – Saint Augustine
