Every time I try to retire, or even think of retiring from acting, my agent comes up with a script. ~ Anthony Hopkins
He called it a “difficult week”…
It’s always interesting, intriguing, mystifying and sometimes breathtaking when we step back from our own obsessive impulse to fill space…and just allow. I was searching for a different Anthony Hopkins quote when I came across the one above. I loved it because it says so much. Is there a greater stepping back than the simple thought of retiring? Some of life’s greatest magic happens when we just get out of our own way.
Just the thought! Did you know that by degree, the very moment you have a thought there is a spark…an opening in the universe set in motion to receive the manifestation/birth of that thought. The more deeply impassioned thoughts fueled with purpose and strong desire will ignite the greater sparks in the natural world to…feed the newborn.
The Hopkins quote I was searching for was from an interview he gave on the Actors Studio. He was trying to encourage the young aspiring actors to be bold and take the horrifying step into the uncharted and the unknown…that when you step into the fear of pursuing your greatest challenges, “legions of angels will rise up around you” to conspire on your behalf. It was one of the most powerful things I have ever heard anyone say.
Yes, it was a difficult week…locally and globally. I began it with a conversation with a friend in which we were discussing my stepping back. She told me of someone she knew who was suffering a breakdown over what he perceived as the destruction of our country. The next day I learned that a friend who I had just seen at my 40th high school reunion suffered a major heart attack and was in critical condition.
How do we harness the flame without being consumed by it? World champions find the head of the pin where making the most important shot in the universe and letting go actually coexist! And in that moment you close the biggest case in all of your eighteen years in the business. In that moment a national figure that you admire follows you on twitter. In that moment you feel the soft whisper of angels’ breath as the wind at your back instead of the relentless forces of defeat in your face.
Yes…sometimes we simply need to step back to hear what our agent has to say to turn retirement into an Oscar and defeat into victory! 🙂
