I am part of a small business networking group that meets for breakfast every week. We each take turns as the featured speaker of the week to make a ten minute presentation to the rest of the group. This week we heard from one of the most popular members of our group who’s like everybody’s computer doctor. He even makes house calls!
He chose to speak about what’s happening in the world of technology as it relates to internet search engines like Google, how they get everything there is to know about us and what they do with that information. Now I should point out here that when I first joined this group three to four years ago, political discussion of any sort was more or less taboo. Two things have happened since which seems to have left us all feeling a little less restricted. First, we’ve become friends, and second we are all a little more concerned about the political circumstances that are adversely impacting our businesses.
Our friend gave a very informative sort of yin-yang talk on how Google is able to make our lives easier by knowing our interests, wants and desires. And as he started to get into some of the downside issues, we naturally veered into the more political waters of 4th Amendment right-to-privacy protection and the NSA surveillance controversy that has many American’s rightfully alarmed. The discussion was lively and held everyone’s interest, especially piquing mine when he brought up the ACLU as a firewall that exists to protect us all against such governmental incursions. He wondered “why Conservatives have such a problem with the ACLU, when they exist to protect us all.”
So he had me a bit stumped here to be perfectly honest. I realized that other than having thought of them as a mostly Liberal-leaning organization, I really didn’t know much more about them. Later that same day I took the time to do a little research and this is what I was able to learn:
“Since it’s founding in 1920, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has been the guardian of liberty, working in the nation’s courts, legislatures and communities to defend and preserve individual working rights and liberties guaranteed by the Constitution and the laws of the United States.”
Well, reading that gave me a little stronger sense of confidence…until I came across this:
The American Civil Liberties Union (aclu) is incrementally abandoning its support of all free speech in favor of a liberal agenda. Author and lawyer Wendy Kaminer denounced the change in the Wall Street Journal on May 23, saying “the aclu is being transformed into just another liberal human-rights group that reliably defends the rights of liberal speakers.”
The cases the aclu ignores provide the clearest evidence of the ideological change. The organization has ignored Harper v. Poway, a case hinging on whether a student can wear a T-shirt denouncing homosexuality. This is telling because the aclu has staunchly supported the right of students to wear T-shirts that promote homosexuality, as well as those that bash President Bush; one student even received a Youth Activist Scholarship for her support of a shirt stating: “Gay, fine by me.” But when the free speech opposes homosexuality, the aclu goes mute. Even when the ever-reliable Ninth Circuit opposed Harper’s free speech, the aclu stayed out of it, ignoring the creation of a precedent rejecting the First Amendment based on “the imagined feelings of gay students.” http://www.thetrumpet.com/article/3690.1974.0.0/society/the-aclus-liberal-bias
Well now, as you might imagine, I’m beginning to smell something’s not quite right…so I dig a little deeper:
“I am for socialism, disarmament and ultimately for abolishing the state itself as an instrument of violence and compulsion. I seek the social ownership of property, the abolition of the propertied class and sole control by those who produce wealth. Communism is, of course, the goal.”ACLU founder Roger Baldwin, 1935 http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=1006040615450
So all kinds of things begin to make a whole lot more sense when we take the time to pull up a weed and follow its roots. Baldwin’s stated goals are 100% antithetical to the organizations mission statement! They are the proverbial fox in the hen house! Think about how much damage weeds can do to your garden in a matter of a few weeks. Not only has this parasitic plant been actively destroying our garden for at least the past 78 years…it has done so while pretending to be the guardian flower! I’m sure our friend, who happens to be an amazing gardener, has no idea of what has been lurking under his garden bed for all these years!
- Under the “protecting” eye of the ACLU a Christian Baker will go to jail for refusing to cater a gay marriage, but the Muslim truck driver is free to refuse the cargo of alcohol.
- Under the “protecting” eye of the ACLU we have devolved from Harper v. Poway to banning the American Flag to avoid “racial strife”! http://www.foxnews.com/us/2014/02/27/court-rules-school-can-ban-american-flag-shirts-to-avoid-racial-strife/
- Where is our “guardian of liberty”-ACLU while this government criminalizes the 2nd Amendment Rights of it’s law-abiding citizen’s?
- Where is our “guardian of liberty”-ACLU while Conservatives are singled out and targeted by the IRS and NSA?
- I don’t see the ACLU mentioned here either? http://www.pocketfullofliberty.com/third-party-consent-searches/
As a matter of fact, sometimes relying on this particular “guardian flower” leaves me feeling (hat-tip to Jackson Brown) like I’m “Running on Empty”! 😦
On the other hand, I have a dream. I believe we can restore the garden to its original and very healthy function as an abundantly bountiful source of produce for everyone! We’ve already taken the first step by talking as friends with common interests.
2) Restore our schools to their original function as places of learning rather than camps of indoctrination.
3) Restore the once noble profession of journalism to its original function as news-driven rather than agenda-driven.
4) Restore our once great Republic as a nation of laws that no one is above, with one system of justice…that must be blind for very good and obvious reasons.
In my dream we are able to do these things and turn back from the abyss. Our businesses thrive, we return to feeling vital and fulfilled as we set positive examples and leave lasting legacies to our children…empowering them to do the same.
In my nightmare, we fail to come together and fall instead into a twilight of darkness that holds more pain and horror than any of us can possibly imagine.
