“It’s Only a Movie”…Isn’t It?

The Star of "8 Years a President"!

The Star of “8 Years a President”!

“When misguided public opinion honors what is despicable and despises what is honorable, punishes virtue and rewards vice, encourages what is harmful and discourages what is useful, applauds falsehood and smothers truth under indifference or insult, a nation turns its back on progress and can be restored only by the terrible lessons of catastrophe.” ~ Frederic Bastiat

Can you imagine the size and scope of the catastrophe Bastiat had in mind, if 9/11 wasn’t enough to move the restoration dial…

Do you remember growing up, when our older brothers, sisters or even our parents in the middle of a real scary movie would remind us that “it’s only a movie” so we wouldn’t actually be scared to death?

The three of us watched 12 Years a Slave the other night and I nearly hated myself to death! Thank God I missed The Butler, or it would be my white ghost writing to you now, I promise you! No, I’m dead serious…even my wife was moved to distance herself from me sitting there on the couch! But it’s only a movie, I whispered to myself.

Companies are successful because they figure out how to satisfy a need. Hollywood is powerful because they’ve figured out how to make us feel…and dictators and presidents have always loved them for it! Sadly, our self-esteem as a nation has suffered terribly under this generation of film-makers though. Once upon a time the music of Glen Miller, Tommy Dorsey and the Andrews Sisters, together with the comedy of Abbot & Costello on the silver screen boosted our moral as Americans at a time of world war when we needed it the most! These days however, the Hollywood recipe seems to have moved from unite, to divide and conquer I’m afraid.

How and why, for instance, would they make one of the greatest biblical stories ever (Noah)…and literally leave God out of it? Yesterday, I read a horrifying story of hospitals in “Great” Britain burning the bodies of aborted babies for heat, and I thought how and why would a single soul be shocked? This is exactly what Godless societies do! “It is true that the policies of the president of the United States have become progressively more hostile toward Christian civilization. He appears to be a totally secularized man who aggressively promotes anti-life and anti-family policies,” Burke told the magazine.

But can a Catholic Cardinal compete with a Hollywood Mogul? That’s the question!! If I were King of Hollywood, I’d be tempted to expose them all with my own blockbuster…

“The Money Meme is failing and the Ponzi is crumbling; the central banking War Gods are losing control of the ‘faith and belief’ support that is the glue that holds it all together. Public support for the Pontificating Politicians is at all time lows, and these mid level Mayhem Muckers are desperate to distract, divide and destroy in order to divert attention from themselves and their puppeteers.” I’d call it War Gods! “I have been speaking of late about personal sovereignty, of how first and foremost it is a State of Mind. The buck stops here for I alone decide if I will release the power that springs from within me and transfer it to the War Gods. If I were to do so, the sole result of this transaction would be that my power is used against me. I am a sovereign entity, a State of One, head honcho and chief bottle washer of Cognitive Dissonance. The Gods of War will not have my consent. Will they have yours?”

Then again, God himself has produced the greatest horror flick of ALL time! It is guaranteed to finally move the “restoration dial” and frighten every single one of us back to our very founding! Well, it’s in the works actually…but it will be called, “8 Years a President!” 🙂

“Evil talks about tolerance only when it’s weak. When it gains the upper hand, its vanity always requires the destruction of the good and the innocent, because the example of good and innocent lives is an ongoing witness against it. So it always has been. So it always will be. And America has no special immunity to becoming an enemy of its own founding beliefs about human freedom, human dignity, the limited power of the state, and the sovereignty of God.” ~ Archbishop Chaput

Great! I follow your blog and love it. My writing is so different and knowing it’s ok, I sometimes wish I had your gift. In this one, I find I need to say that there actually are remnants of good in Hollywierd – some actually expose things we need to know.

“Long ago I stated that when everyone thinks alike, there’s a distinct possibility that no one in that group is truly thinking!” ~ Josiahe. Funny…I was thinking the very same thing about your gift! 🙂

Chip, what was wrong with 12 Years a Slave or The Butler? I don’t understand from your post here why you were so turned off to them. I thoroughly enjoyed both movies, as I do stories about the Holocaust. It was a terrible time in American history and it’s not something we should forget. I don’t think either film was geared to make white people of today feel guilty, but I don’t want to assume that I know why you didn’t like it. Tell me. Sigrid

Hi Sig! I didn’t say I “didn’t like it”. What I see that you apparently don’t, is an intention on the part of Hollywood elite to inspire Americans to, as Archbishop Chaput puts it, become enemies of our own founding beliefs. Hollywood and pop culture in general is Obama’s General Patton in what Cardinal Burke refers to as the “anti-life & anti-family” policies of this administration. I have a number of black Conservative friends who know exactly what is going on and why…I will go you one better. I would bet my life that if Solomon Northup could have come back from the grave to warn us of the devastating “8 year sequel”, he would have! I’m sure he tried…

      • sigridmac says:

Chip, thanks for the reply but I’m still not clear on what you’re trying to say. How did that particular film try to undermine the founding beliefs? In what way? I’m not arguing with you – just trying to get you to expound because I fail to understand what you’re saying. And you implied that The Butler did the same thing – how so? What specific and offensive Hollywood message did 12 Years have that I missed? Love, S

    • Chip Murray says:

@ Sig…when our kids were in the 1st grade, they enacted the Rosa Parks story…on President’s Day! So…here we have the most impressionable minds among us being fed and acting out the evil abuse of power that manifested itself in the institution of slavery while ignoring the two men (Washington & Lincoln) who did more to liberate mankind than any two men before Jesus Christ himself. “12 Years a Slave” was a wonderful film…you continue to miss my point. It leaves the viewer with a very unflattering sense of early America…which conveniently sets the stage for so many educators to revise or alter altogether. When in fact, early American leaders were deeply conflicted on these matters…and to their credit, put country before self in guiding us away from the old institutions and to the Truth, they themselves authored! PS- I did’nt see The Butler because I know the agenda….

Thanks for the detailed explanation. I understand what you’re saying better now, but I don’t agree. Last year there were some wonderful films that extolled Lincoln for his bravery; not every movie is making the same point. 12 Years was not about the moral conflict of American leaders, although it clearly showed a deep division between North and South regarding the topic and our guy was saved by a white guy with a conscience. It was really about how one black man who was already living a free life was kidnapped and put back into captivity. That’s the way I saw it. And I’m not sure what kind of agenda you are talking about with The Butler. I thought it was fabulous, but I didn’t like the way they embellished and stretched and fabricated the life of Eugene Allen. I thought it would have been better to have stuck to the facts. Agree to disagree, my friend? Great blog.

Hi Chip, I did not see either of the movies you mentioned, but I agree with you. It is a fact that the majority of people in the entertainment industry are leftists, atheists, and or anti-Christian. They are responsible for much propaganda designed to serve political ends or desensitize the audience to sin.
It is very easy for us to judge the past, but the fact is that slavery has existed, (and still does) for all of human history. To constantly remind people of the plight of African slaves who where sold by other Africans, (Black and Arab) to Europeans and Americans serves no good purpose. It kindles resentment in Blacks against Whites, and helps to promote eternal victim mentality. We are not responsible for the past. It also serves to promote guilt in people, which causes them to treat all people of African descent, whether they are descendents of slaves or African immigrants with pity or condescension. And there is a political party that would like to keep Americans of African descent forever dependent on government “social” programs in order to retain a voting block. The bane of Blacks in America today is not the long ago practice of slavery but the dissolution of the father led Christian family.
    P.S. My Black Pastor agrees.
