For the first time since 2005, I requested a lunch meeting with one of the two men I report to. I work for a large multi-national financial services corporation headquartered in Paris, France. Dror, who I think of as more friend than a superior, happens to be an Israeli-American. There were a couple of things I needed to get off of my mind…
Several weeks ago I had received a letter from the home office signed by our Chairman and the Chief Diversity Officer…Chief Diversity Officer! I wonder what kind of post-grad credentials one needs to land that position? Anyway, it was an email blast that I’m assuming landed in the mailbox of our entire sales force, as well as employees announcing that our company was a proud supporter and sponsor of the annual Gay Pride Parade in New York City. I replied to our Chairman and CDO that I hoped and prayed their concept of “Diversity” would never come at the expense of our “freedom of opinion”. The other matter had to do with the company flagging my blog posts on LinkedIn. To set the stage, after a brief discussion about the latest developments in Israel, I popped a question Dror was not expecting. “Are you a physical being having a spiritual experience, or a spiritual being having a physical experience?” I asked. Good Sunday Morning Dear Friend!
Our Physical Experience
It was a trick question of course. We are all spiritual beings having a physical experience. It’s really just a matter of awareness, but it is the most absolutely critical distinction any of us will ever make. The greatest teacher, rabbi, guru, prophet of all time for having shaken and freed the world of men from the oppressive grip of physical attachments; the Jewish Carpenter from Nazareth endowed us with a much greater kingdom “not of this (physical) world”…not subject to its rulers, or bound by its chains. And yet, here we are…
“We’re operating in a topsy-turvy Sherwood Forest where instead of Robin Hood and his merry band of thieves stealing from the rich to feed the poor, you’ve got the government and its merry band of corporate thieves stealing from the poor to fatten the wallets of the rich. In this way, the poor get poorer and the rich get richer. All the while, the American Dream of peace, prosperity, and liberty has turned into a nightmare of endless wars, debilitating debt, and outright tyranny.
What Americans don’t seem to comprehend is that if the government can arbitrarily take away your property, without your having much say about it, you have no true rights. You’re nothing more than a serf or a slave.” ~ John Whitehead, the Rutherford Institute
The disciples left their fishing nets, trades, friends, families and homes to follow him. In other words, they left their attachments…their moorings to the physical world. One of the most amazing experiences you will ever have on this earth is in the adventure of cutting yourself loose from your routine. Spontaneous trips to unfamiliar places…by yourself, is exceptionally powerful in this way. When we “settle down” to raise our families, we encourage our kids to get out there and do just this…before they too inevitably cement themselves to the iron-clad grip of the “earthly wheel”.
So I’m thinking that the Rabbi must have had something worth following to inspire those who gave up so much to follow him. After all, most of them were well beyond their youthful years and well-rooted if not wed to the wheel…just as many of us are today. In fact, when you really stop to think about it, how easily could the Whitehead quote above be applied to the days of Pilate and harsh Roman Rule over the subjects, serfs and slaves of their time? Does freedom lose its sweetness over centuries? Do the passions, ambitions, cruelties and greed of men lessen, grow somehow sweeter or change their character over the same span of years? Then how is it that so many of us indulge the fantasy that we have “Progressively” risen above these things…while being swept away under the rising tide of reality’s plagues!
Our world is “topsy-turvy” because the darker nature of man wields a timeless stiletto wedge that moves silently and slowly to separate us from the Truth of ourselves before we ever realize its gone missing…until we wake up one day as prisoners of the green czars, diversity officers and other Godless control freaks…because we were afraid of losing our stuff!
I needed to let them know, I love my job…I love the people I work with and for…but the LGBT letter and the flagging of my post were clear signals of the wedge’s impending and final thrust…one that my conscience will never allow. I pray for every soul reading these words to ready yourselves. Yes, the point will come when you will be forced to give up everything to save it all.
