Who is the “modern day Tory” among us? We know full well the modern day patriot as our “leaders”, Democrat and Republican alike, have endeavored so painstakingly to flush out and marginalize them…as “dangerous extremists”. But who might the Tories be in the scheme of things? Do I even have to ask whether or not there is a crisis that tries men’s souls as harshly as the winter of ’76?
Paine wrote; Britain, with an army to enforce her tyranny, has declared that she has a right (not only to TAX) but “to BIND us in ALL CASES WHATSOEVER” and if being bound in that manner, is not slavery, then is there not such a thing as slavery upon earth. I would suggest that only the wishful fool does not see that the devil Paine described was a lamb compared to those who would be our masters now! They (wishful fools) are the modern day Tories Paine so articulately described above…as if he could see them today! And because this is True, our modern day crisis is that much greater as yesterday’s foreign enemy has become today’s domestic one.
If my last blog entry was one of encouragement; this one is meant to echo the clarifying alarm Paine so brilliantly sounded in The Crisis. In my NY Liberty Activists piece, I pointed out the “servile, slavish” NYU professor who was so focused on what his government could do for him he willingly turned his well-educated blind eye to what his government was doing to him…the recently retired professor…on a very sweet pension I would surmise. This would make the modern day crisis greater still! Not only has the foreign enemy become the domestic one; yesterday’s thankless Tory has become today’s comfortable one!
But other than these challenges, what has changed? Has the patriot heart…or man’s nature and love of freedom changed? Is there a single soul among us who doesn’t love his child enough to preserve these precious things for them and their families-to-be? Read this amazing observation of the Tory’s “self-interest” nature from Paine’s own patriot heart:
I once felt all that kind of anger, which a man ought to feel, against the mean principles that are held by the Tories: a noted one, who kept a tavern at Amboy, was standing at his door, with as pretty a child in his hand, about eight or nine years old, as I ever saw, and after speaking his mind as freely as he thought was prudent, finished with this unfatherly expression, “Well! give me peace in my day.” Not a man lives on the continent but fully believes that a separation must some time or other finally take place, and a generous parent should have said, “If there must be trouble, let it be in my day, that my child may have peace;” and this single reflection, well applied, is sufficient to awaken every man to duty.
The following Paine quote reveals the essence of the American Exceptionalism Radical Academia so desperately keeps hidden from the light of day and the impressionable minds they seek to fill; knowing full well, as Louis Brandeis once famously said, “Sunlight is the best disinfectant.”
If you have yet to watch Peter Doocy’s “The Man Who Shot Usama bin Laden” one-on-one with Navy Seal Robert O’Neill, I whole-heartedly encourage you to do so. You will meet the man Paine describes in the quote below to the quintessential T! Especially at the point he (O’Neill) candidly discusses facing the probability of his own death on the mission.
I love the man that can smile in trouble, that can gather strength from distress, and grow brave by reflection. ‘Tis the business of little minds to shrink; but he whose heart is firm, and whose conscience approves his conduct, will pursue his principles unto death.
There is another O’Neill-like hero I would like to salute here. His name is Stewart Rhodes, the founder and Director of Oath Keepers. I would encourage every reader to seek out and join their local chapter. Oath Keepers are the TRUE “Guardians of the Republic”! It was Stewart himself who inspired today’s message with his own New Years greeting…which happened to include Thomas Paine:
Let 2015 be a year when we all honor our oath to defend the Constitution by acting with maximum courage, strength, and honor, to live out the spirit of the Founding fathers, and to honor those who have come before. Remember, as John Quincy Adams said, “Duty is ours; results are God’s.” Let us set aside fear and do our duty. ~ Stewart Rhodes
Paine’s Crisis has become our Crisis! ISIS and Putin are distractions! We are at war with a domestic enemy who assails us with intimidation; attempts to silence us with Chicago-style thuggery and IRS audits while he purges the ranks of our military and law enforcement organizations of those loyal to the Constitution!
I would argue, however, that Paine’s Tory was a far more forgivable one than his modern day counterpart. I could more easily forgive the inability to dream that freedom could be won, than to absolve those who painlessly inherited it, took it for granted, and then gave it away!
Trust in God my friends! If we hold courage, strength and honor as Stewart calls us to, the rest will come naturally. Know who you are, who your real friends are, and what you are prepared to do. Trust yourself and know the countless faces and lies of the enemy. He that the majority of Americans identify as “their #1 concern” is the same enemy who would force the most comprehensively invasive file on each and every last one of us who will then need their consent to breathe, sealing our fate by ultimately “regulating” and monitoring everything we have to say!
I would say my friends standing here on the cusp of 2015 that this is our “Fort Lee Moment”. We are few up against the many, in need of a miracle now just as they were then. And just as they were then, it is the few defending liberty…while the modern day Tory repeats the defense of the indefensible. May God Bless us!
