The Sunday Morning Tune-up ~ The Holiness in Poverty

The Holiest of Places

“I do not think we have enough of the wondering spirit that the Holy Spirit gives. It is the child spirit. A child is always wide awake with wonder. But as we get older we forget that a child’s wonder is nearer the truth than our older knowledge.” ~ Oswald Chambers, Intelligent Witnessing

I spent my childhood in a much different world. There were rich and poor, and there was a vast middle of the rest of us. Our consumerism, by today’s standards, was impoverishment for the very simple reason we could not spend what we did not have. Our religion was religion…until the birth of a 2 and 1/8th” by 3 and 3/8″ piece of plastic took it over. If I had to pick one word to describe the eighties, it would be seduction. Discernment and wisdom slowly gave way to “the only difference between men and boys is the price of their toys.”

During the “advent” of our seduction, as fate would have it, I took my first trip to Ireland. It was the perfect time to go you see, because pre-seduction Ireland was a wee bit behind us in catching the modernism bug. We were already in stage two. The contrast was stunning. They were so much more alive to me…more connected to the “wondering spirit” Chambers refers to in the opening quote. They were more connected to one another…and I felt a holiness in connecting with them. There was a simple, plain, and ordinary every-day contentment in celebrating life, comradery, song, and good cheer…along with more than a few pints of Guinness stout.

Before we get to the heart of today’s post, I need to address something extremely important, which is that most people who read me do so in silence. They have the opportunity to comment, but choose not to…even though they could do so anonymously. I think that’s interesting, not because of what they would tell me, but what they would admit to themselves. You see, our seduction, 100% bought and paid for by the Devil himself, has only one purpose…to lead us away from the Truth. Period. Advent, which heralds the second most important event in Christianity, the birth of the Christ, begins November 15th and ends on Christmas Day. The light of Truth as prophesied from the line of David, exactly fourteen generations after David, who was exactly fourteen generations removed from Abraham. The Son of God came into this world in the lowest and most humbly impoverished place imaginable…a cold and dirty stable…for one purpose; to take the sins of ALL of mankind upon Himself. He came for our salvation. The Truth the Devil cannot bear our knowing. In a sense, one can look at the world today and claim the Devil is winning. In reality the single most important event in Christianity, the Crucifixion and Resurrection, has already occurred and cannot be undone. Only our acceptance of this Truth, of our own free will, can be undone. Again…refer to the Chambers quote above. It is a hard truth to accept as we grow older and away from the wonder of our simpler and more innocent selves. But the Truth is still the Truth.

Watching the political version of Wrestlemania in Washington, we are beginning to see how men in high places handle truth. They hide it, revise it, disguise it, manipulate it, and obfuscate it…unaware they serve only the Devil in so doing. Just as we do by accepting their trickery…which we do, thinking we’ve something to lose by defending the Truth. As I said, its hard. This is what happens to us when our toys become more important to us than our own immortal souls. Please have a listen to Ann’s podcast “Liar, Liar, Pants on Fire”. Matt Lauer, who was paid $25 Million per year, had a “rape lock” which had to be professionally installed on his door…to trap his victims inside. Savannah Guthrie, Al Roker, the entire network…they all knew…and said nothing…because their toys became more important than the Truth.

I apologize to those of you who are used to reading me earlier. I overslept, and that’s truth. I’ll leave you with two things before I go. I’ve just read the first two chapters of Gregory Koukl’s “The Story of Reality” as part of the men’s Bible study group I belong to. The Truth is that ONLY Christianity fully explains the world: God, Man, Jesus, Cross, Resurrection. The true story of reality about the beginning (creation), the conflict (fall), the conflict resolution (redemption), and the ending (restoration)…or, the story the Devil doesn’t want you to know. And secondly, for those of you in the New York Metropolitan-Hudson Valley area, its not too late to sign up for “America’s Godly Heritage, Session 10, Revival & Reformation”.

It’s never too late, and its FREE. Hope to see you there!

It is all about the truth isn’t it? Every side wants to claim the truth thereby assuming the moral high ground, or they fight to diminish the idea of objective truth all together. Pontius Pilate could not handle the truth and what it revealed to him could he? He asked Jesus at his trial, “what is the truth?” We see this sort of thing happening everyday in Washington D.C. and elsewhere,e.g. as when we read your blog sometimes.

    • Chip Murray says:

The paradigm has shifted. Every side has become two sides, good and evil. The side that hates us, used to claim truth. They’ve been forced to disown truth and fight for things like fairness and inclusion…

    Eureka, I get it.
