The Sunday Morning Tune-up ~ The Greatest Teacher

Truth is a Straight Line to Calvary

Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel land and sea to win one proselyte, and when he is won, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves. ~ Matthew: 23:15

pros·e·lyte                                                                                                                                                 /ˈpräsəˌlīt/                                                                                                                                               noun

  1. a person who has converted from one opinion, religion, or party to another, especially recently.                                                                                                                             synonyms: convert, new believer, catechumen                                                            “proselytes are not spiritually mature enough to be counseling others in church matters”

I just read a heartbreaking report that there were off-duty cops in the Thousand Oaks bar who were unarmed because of California’s “Progressive” Gun Laws. These twelve people might very well be with us today if it weren’t for the fact that the Browns, Cuomos, Bloombergs, and de Blasios of the world DO NOT want good guys with guns among us. They don’t want sheepdogs…they want sheep. They want to rule over a nation of sheep. Question: Will we allow it?

Matthew 23:15 is Jesus warning the religious order of His day…the Establishment you might say. When I think of the corruption, malfeasance, and mass murder happening around us…too much to keep track of. And in my mind, I position these images in the context of the proselyte definition…particularly the “spiritually mature” part I’ve highlighted in red. And then I think about the people we are consciously promoting to higher authority over our lives (Waters, Pelosi, Schiff), and electing to represent us (Ocasio-Cortez), and I feel a very cold chill in my bones. We are engaged with an enemy best described as a roaring lion walking about, seeking whom he may devour. In the War of Powers and Principalities…we’ve been prepared for little more than a game of checkers. Question: Why have we allowed this? And the hardest question of all: Why, KNOWING, do we continue to allow it?

I am probably guilty of too much thinking these days, but it just seems to be what I do…connect things in order to make sense of them. Like what I’ve described in my first paragraph makes no sense to me whatsoever. Clint Eastwood said it best, “Giving up your guns because criminals have too many guns is like having yourself castrated because your neighbor has too many kids.” Twelve people are dead because of the policies and agendas of the Cuomos, de Blasios, Pelosis, Waters, and Schiffs…and we do what? We re-elect and promote them. That makes no sense whatsoever. So, I think…

I think about the Kabbala Tree of Life I referred to in last week’s SMTU. God’s map of our unseen world, in which He placed Gevurah (masculine, father, firm warrior) opposite Chesed (feminine, mother, soft, compassionate) for good reason. And then I came across Stephen P. White’s words in Miters & Millstones at TCT: “There is something of the essence of manhood to be found in one who stands forth from the rest, for the sake of the rest, and makes an offering of sacrifice on behalf of those entrusted to his care. He does not lord his authority over his people; he lays down his life for them. Without equivocating too much about particular vocations, that’s a fair description of the vocation of all men.” And I thought, now there’s as good a description of “spiritual maturity” as you’ll ever find.

I read Schall On Retribution: “The full understanding of our free choices includes the seeing of their consequences. Our self-initiated actions are not good or bad because of their consequences. But what we choose to do impinges on the world because of what we have made our choices to be.” And again…“spiritual maturity” in bloom.

And Esolen’s Who Are The People? “The first cry of the people recorded in the New Testament was “Crucify him!”  I expect it will be the world’s last cry too. But who are ‘the people,’ anyway?  Who were they then?  Who are they now?  Someone who says he speaks for the people ought to tell us where we can find them, and why we should care what they think.” Yup, more “spiritual maturity”…the total sum of which led to my response to Professor Esolen:

Brilliant as usual Tony! “The telltale is obedience, and that alone.” But to whom must we be obedient…when Caesar is demanding more than his due? “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel land and sea to win one proselyte, and when he is won, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves.” ~ Matthew 23:15. The Bishops are proselyte and in league with a rogue Caesar. Convince us to the contrary, and we will fall to our knees in obedience to an authority we are otherwise unable to recognize.

The Only Honest Conclusion and Answer to My Question at the End of 2nd Paragraph:

“Crucify him” is Professor Esolen’s expectation of our “last cry” because he sees us for who we are as a society…on the eve of destruction. As the wolves circle, we have willingly amputated the limb of our own Gevuric selves. Which, oddly enough leads me to our President Trump in the Rose Garden last week. Mr. Gevurah himself! And this gem of a quote:

“One of the best comments I saw on him was someone in the Yahoo News comment section, who said that Trump reminded him of a doctor with no bedside manner. He tells you that you need to lose 100 pounds and stop smoking. You’re offended, you’re angry, you come up with 10 reasons why he’s crazy…and then you realize he’s the only one telling you the truth.” ~ Mike Huckabee

I have said before that Trump is like the classic expert neurosurgeon with lousy bedside manners. Would you prefer an incompetent brain surgeon who was compassionate and comforting at your bedside? Hmmmm…
