Pilate therefore said to him, “You will not speak to me? Do you not know that I have the power to release you, and power to crucify you?” Jesus answered him, “You would have no power over me unless it had been given you from above; therefore he who delivered me to you has the greater sin.” ~ John 19:10,11
I work for a very large “global” corporation. As with most large global corporations these days, we have a Director of Diversity. Ours happens to be a very lovely woman of the Muslim faith who also happens to share the same birthday with yours truly. A few weeks ago, she had sent out an email to our entire field force of 400 associates, promoting the benefits of marketing to the LGBTQ community. My instant reaction, as a white Christian man, was visceral. I’ve had some time to process this incident and my response to it, and this is what I’ve realized…just two days before Good Friday. This one incident contains two separate truths:
- Diversity is the reflection of the values enshrined in our founding documents, that “all men are created equal…endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights,” This is a very good thing, and the essence of our American Exceptionalism.
- There is an imposed diversity, an artificial diversity that pretends to be what it is not, by perverting the 1st Amendment with gimmicks such as “hate speech”, advantaging one group at the expense of another. This is a very bad thing, and the root essence of tyranny.
You might ask what these things have to do with this, the Holy Day of Good Friday, when Jesus Christ was beaten, scourged, mocked, and crucified on Calvary between two common thieves. I will tell you…
It all comes down to Sacrifice.
“That was some fire!”, Joe says to me on Monday. My friend who did not know about the 5-yr-old thrown off a 3-story balcony by a Somali Muslim in Minnesota, knew about the Notre Dame fire, but made no connection to Islam because he was unaware of the one dozen attacks on French churches in the same week, as well as the fact that there have been 875 French Catholic Churches torched, vandalized, and desecrated in 2018!
And sadly, my uninformed friend is far from alone. Question: WHY ARE SO MANY OF US UNINFORMED? Answer: Because too many of us are afraid to befriend and defend the truth people in power are trying to murder and hide away. Why: Because we will be attacked, scorned, and/or cast aside for doing so.
In this holiest week for Christians on this most significant day, when Pilate gave Jesus the chance to save himself, to appease, to bend…He chose instead, to fulfill scripture, to “finish”, fortunately for each and every last one of us. In this most holy week of all, the poser surrenders to the lie…while the uninformed see only a fire burning, completely unaware they have been betrayed by the poser/Judas…that they and theirs are consumed in the flames of their own ignorance. Good Friday was a terrible day for those living and dying it. Imagine being betrayed, scourged (your flesh torn apart by barb-tipped whips), mocked, and killed by the same people you loved more than anyone has ever loved them…willingly, for them. Imagine how lost and devastated the disciples were. Imagine Mary living every minute of this agonizing day. Well…stayed tuned. Things are about to get very, very interesting…before they get to a place that none of us ever dreamed was even possible. See you tomorrow…God willing.
But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water. He who saw it was borne witness—his testimony is true, and he knows that he tells the truth—that you also may believe. ~ John 19:34,35
